COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORMULA, INFANT, POWDERED, MILK-BASED
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers milk-based powdered infant formula suitable for use by the Federal Government.
Salient Characteristics.
The milk-based powdered infant formula shall be of the following type and container pack and packaging size as specified in the contract or purchase order.
1. Type:
a. Milk-Based Powdered Infant Formula.
b. Milk-Based Powdered Infant Formula, Iron-Fortified.
2. Container pack and packaging size:
a. 1-pound can, packed 6 cans per case.
b. 1-pound can, packed 12 cans per case.
c. 30.1 gram foil pouch, packed 4 pouches per carton, packed 6 cartons per case.
d. 30.1 gram foil pouch, packed 4 pouches per carton, packed 12 cartons per case.
The milk-based powdered infant formula shall certain not more than three percent moisture by weight and be of suitable particle size and solubility such that it will readily disperse in water at room temperature in the proportions recommended for its use. The product shall be free from lumps and foreign material and contain not more than 15.0 mg scorched particles when compared to the United States Scorched Particle Standards for Dry Milks (7 CPR 58.2676). When mixed with water, it shall have a normal characteristic taste and odor, free from rancidity and other undesirable tastes and odors. Upon microbiological analysis, the milk-based powdered infant formula shall not exceed the following results:
Standard Plate Count - maximum: 500 per gram of dried powder.
Coliform - maximum: 10 per gram of dried powder.
Salmonella - (per 1500 gram sample) - negative.
Coagulase Positive Staphylococci - (per gram) - negative.
Cans of milk-based powdered infant formula shall be free of excessive dents and distortions, free of rust end other evidence of improper storage.
