SALT SUBSTITUTE
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has authorized the use of
this
Commercial Item Description.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 This Commercial Item Description (CID) covers salt substitute, packed in commercially acceptable containers, suitable for use by the Federal Government.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Active ingredient: the active ingredient in the salt substitute shall be potassium chloride of Food Chemicals Codex or U.S. Pharmacopeia-National Formulary quality.
2.2 Additional ingredients: Bulking agents such as monopotassium glutamate or glutamic acid hydrochloride are acceptable.
2.3 Finished product:
2.3.1 Color and flavor: The salt substitute shall have a typical color and flavor. The salt substitute shall season like salt to satisfy the need for salty flavors in foods.
