5. PACKAGING
5.1 Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The chicken, noodles, and vegetables in sauce shall be preserved, packaged, packed, labeled, and case marked in accordance with good commercial practice. Commercial labeling and packaging, as may be augmented by the solicitation, contract, or purchase order, shall be acceptable. Vendors permitted to place the kosher and halal certification symbol(s) and/or markings on individual packages and shipping containers. The symbols attest to compliance with applicable dietary (kosher and halal) laws. Shipping containers shall comply with the National Motor Freight Classification or Uniform Freight Classification, as applicable.
6. FOR DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PROCUREMENTS
6.1 The following tests and examinations are applicable to Department of Defense procurements of Operational Rations. Sampling shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-105, Sampling Procedures and Tables for Inspection by Attributes.
6.2 First article. When the solicitation, contract, or purchase order requires a first article, it shall be inspected in accordance with the quality assurance provisions of this document and evaluated for overall appearance and palatability. Any failure to conform to the quality assurance provisions of this document or any appearance or palatability failure shall be cause for rejection of the first article.
6.3 Packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The chicken, noodles, and vegetables in sauce shall be filled and sealed into a heat sealable flexible pouch, thermoprocessed, unit packed into paperboard cartons, and packed for shipment in accordance with class 1 of MIL-P-44073, Packaging and Thermoprocessing of Foods in Flexible Pouches. Labeling of pouches, marking of paperboard cartons and marking of shipping containers shall also be in accordance with Mil-P-44073. Inspection of filled and sealed pouches, paperboard cartons and shipping containers shall be in accordance with the quality assurance provisions of MIL-P-44073.
6.4 Net weight examination. The net weight of the filled and sealed pouches shall be determined by weighing each sample unit on a suitable scale tared with a representative empty pouch. Any individual net weight of less than 7.5 ounces (212.6 g) shall be classified as a minor defect. The lot size shall be expressed din pouches. The sample unit shall be one filled and sealed pouch. The inspection level shall be S-3, and the acceptable quality level (AQL), expressed in terms of defects per hundred units, shall be 2.5. Results shall be reported to the nearest 0.1 ounce (3 g). In addition, the lot shall be rejected if the sample average net weight is less than 8.0 ounces (226.8 g).
